ST. Benedict School

Susan Rys - Principal

Principal's Message
I hope your holidays were filled with beautiful memories warmed by the love of family and friends. Many wonderful things happened in 2011. As Catholics and people of faith, we should always find great hope in the future because of the most enduring experience of Christmas. The remembrance of Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world is the greatest gift of all. May the wonderful blessings of Christmas be with you throughout the New Year and may the peace of the Lord guide you and your families to a deepened faith. Let's pray that weekly Mass and time for worship can be New Year's resolutions everyone can keep. God bless you and Happy New Year!

All I Want For Christmas
Congratulations are in order again this year for Mr. Whitaker, the teachers and students for a wonderful Christmas Program. This year's program titled "All I Want for Christmas" was an exceptional production. The script was the result of an after school writing class. The cast delivered the message of the true meaning of Christmas. DVD's are still available for $10.00.

Christmas Light Parade/Cookie Walk
St. Benedict School was well represented in the ninth annual "Blue Island Christmas Light Parade" on December 4.
The Student Council and staff members rode in our Christmas Bus led by a group of parents and students distributing school information.
H.A.S.A. and their elves also partook in the festivities on December 4 by hosting the "Cookie Walk."
Thank you to Michelle Bauer and her helpers and all of you that baked and helped to make the event a big success.

The profit was $480 because of the sales of homemade cookies from our school families.

La Pastorela
The Latino Initiative Group sponsored a Christmas play "La Pastorela" on December 3rd in the gym. The play was a nice family event and was very successful. The profit of $1,785 will go toward scholarship. Thank you to the Latino Initiative Group for all the work you do for the school.

Parent Ambassadors
A group of parents have been formally trained to be our Parent Ambassadors. The group is made up of Hispanic parents who are helping in recruitment efforts. Their task is to contact parents of Religious Education students and parishioners who will have children ready for preschool and Kindergarten next year. This approach has helped us to target prospective families and build a relationship that will lead to enrollment. Our goal for 2012-2013 is to have an enrollment of minimum 210. Everyone is encouraged to help us in our recruitment efforts.

Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe
Students attended Mass for the feasts of Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe in December. Father Ismael visited classrooms beforehand to talk about the many different symbols of Mary that are symbolic to people of different cultures. Students dramatized the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Juan Diego at Mass.

Christmas Prayer Service
St. Benedict faculty and students reflected on their Advent journey and the true meaning of Christmas at our Christmas Prayer Service on December 21. Students in Kindergarten through Second Grade dramatized the Christmas story as it was read. Daily readings, positive behaviors and various service projects throughout the school helped students, faculty and staff prepare for the birthday of Jesus. The choir led the student body in songs, including "Happy Birthday Jesus."

The spirit of Christmas is caring…and sharing…
St. Benedict School students shared cookies, cards and gifts, made by the students, with the elderly before Christmas. Cookies and Christmas cards were delivered on December 19. The Student Council along with representatives from Grades K-8, visited two nursing homes, distributed the gifts and sang Christmas carols to the elderly. The enthusiasm of our students and the smiles and gratitude of the elderly was significant of the true meaning of Christmas. In addition to the Nursing Home project, baby items, and food were collected. Thank you to everyone who supported the various drives and our Baby Bottle Project for the Women's shelter and the infants.

Attendance is expected at Mass and Open House January 29, 2012
Catholic Schools Week is a special week in the Archdiocese of Chicago and at St. Benedict School. It is evident that parents value the Catholic Education children receive at St. Benedict. It is true that many families come from different faiths and worship at different churches. However, as stated at Back To School Night, we have expectations for our families. Support and attendance at special events of our parish school, such as Mass and Open House on January 29th is expected. Our faith is the reason for having our school. I am counting on all families to attend.

Mid Trimester Progress Report
Trimester reports for the second trimester will be sent home on Friday, January 13. This communication tool is meant to give you an update on your child's progress. Parent communication and involvement is vital to a child's success.

Discipline With Purpose
St. Benedict School will be focusing on the following DWP Skills during January. Lessons on Reasons for Rules will be covered January 5-14. Lessons on Completing a Task will be covered January 17-28. While the fifteen skills are incorporated daily, specific weeks during the school year have been set aside to teach the grade appropriate lessons that are part of the Discipline With Purpose curriculum. Parent handouts on both skills are provided this month so you can help teach the skills at home. "Together We Work For the Children We Love."
